Yankees 5, Orioles 4
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Don Baylor knocked in four runs, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning, to lift the New York Yankees to a 5-4 exhibition baseball victory over the Baltimore Orioles Friday night.
With two outs in the eighth and Baltimore leading 4-2, Vic Mata reached base on Orioles shortstop Kelly Paris’ throwing error and Rex Hudler was hit by a pitch from Sammy Stewart, setting up Baylor’s game-winning blast.
Baltimore scored two runs off Yankees starter Ron Guidry, one in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Murray and one in the second on a run- scoring double by Rich Dauer. The Orioles made it 3-0 in the sixth on an RBI single by Wayne Gross.
Storm Davis held the Yankees hitless for 5 1-3 innings before Omar Moreno singled and later scored on Willie Randolph’s double. Baylor added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 after an infield single by Mata advanced Randolph to third.
John Lowenstein’s pinch-hit single gave the Orioles a 4-2 margin in the seventh.
New York, managed by coach Jeff Torborg because Manager Yogi Berra was ill with a stomach virus, improved its spring record to 5-8, while Baltimore dropped to 7-6.
