Horse Trainer Gene Jacobs Dies

NEW YORK (AP) _ Retired thoroughbred trainer Gene Jacobs has died at age 86.

He died at his home in New York on Thursday after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was a brother of Hall of Fame trainer Hirsch Jacobs,

Gene retired in 1989 after 45 years as a trainer.

He trained Sheila’s Reward to the sprint championship in 1951 and 1952.

Jacobs’ wife, Mildred, died several years ago. His survivors include a son, Steven, and a daughter, Elisabeth.

A graveside ceremony will be held Sunday in Brooklyn.
