Fifteen stores fail Cuyahoga County’s back-to-school price checks

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County inspectors checking prices on school supplies ahead of the statewide tax holiday found that nearly 29 percent of the stores they visited charged customers incorrect amounts.

The Department of Consumer Affairs, which conducts sweeps every year around back-to-school time, inspected 52 stores to make sure shoppers are charged the advertised or posted prices on school supplies. Fifteen of those stores rang up at least one item incorrectly, and 11 stores rang up multiple items incorrectly, according to a news release.

“This is a disappointing performance by area stores,” said Director of Consumer Affairs Sheryl Harris in the release. “We only checked back-to-school supplies, which are popular right now. Whether stores undercharge or overcharge, it’s hard for families to take advantage of the best deals if prices ring up wrong at the register.”

Weights-and-measures inspectors tested 25 items at each of the stores for 1,300 items in total. To avoid failing the inspection, stores must have no pricing errors.

The worst offender was Dollar General at 27561 Euclid Avenue in Euclid, which registered 11 pricing errors, according to the release. Some of those supplies were shelved with price signs for different products, the release said.

The other 14 stores that failed were:

Harris urged shoppers to file a complaint with the Consumer Affairs Department if they encounter similar errors this weekend or at any other time of the year.

“Consumers should watch prices as they ring up on the register and demand a price check if there’s an error,” Harris said. “Consumers who can’t get errors corrected at the store or who see multiple errors should file a complaint.”
