Found safe: Wilson police locate woman, arrest man who kidnapped her

According to police, Vashawn D. Tomlin, 42, forced himself into the home and took Latasha K. Mercer, 35, against her will.

The woman who was taken from her home against her will early Wednesday has been located and is safe, polcie say.

Police were searching early Wednesday for a man accused of forcibly taking Latasha K. Mercer, 35, from her home on the 4000 block of Hart Avenue.

According to officials with the Wilson Police Department, the incident occurred before 2:30 a.m. and began as a breaking and entering when Vashawn D. Tomlin, 42, forced himself into the home and took Mercer, 35.

A neighbor told WRAL news that the couple had been dating but broke up this week. Officials only confirmed that the incident was domestic-related.

Before 8:45 a.m., police say Mercer contacted them and said she was safe. Tomlin was taken into custody without incident.
