Officers at wrong address ID’d in fatal shooting of man
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) — An autopsy report identifies Mississippi police officers involved in the shooting of a man who was killed when officers entered the wrong house last year.
News outlets report it says the Southaven police officers were Zachary Durden and Samuel Maze. A grand jury in July declined to indict the officer who shot Ismael Lopez on murder or manslaughter charges.
The report says Durden shot Lopez, and Maze shot the family’s dog. Durden has since resigned.
The nine-page report says Lopez died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. District Attorney John Champion has said Lopez refused commands to put a rifle down. The Lopez family attorney, Murray Wells, has said officers shot through a closed door and hit Lopez in the back of the head.
