WAREHAM, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts police chief is calling the rescue of a five people thrown into the water after their boat hit a buoy “miraculous.”

Wareham acting Chief John Walcek says officers responded at about 8 p.m. Monday to reports of a loud crash and people screaming for help in the Cape Cod Canal.

Officer James White jumped in the water with a life jacket and throw ring and saved two people 120 feet from shore.

Walcek says “the strong canal current, and darkness made the rescue of these two people miraculous.”

Officer Blaise Lalli spotted three others clinging to a channel marker buoy and directed the harbormaster’s boat to them.

The only person named by police was Andrew Murray, of Mattapoisett, who owned the crashed boat.

State Environmental Police are investigating.
