St. Joseph’s Advances to A10 Semifinals
CINCINNATI (AP) _ Junior Dave Mallon scored a career-high 17 points as St. Joseph’s beat Richmond 63-51 on Thursday and advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
Conference co-player of the year Pat Carroll added 16 points for the Hawks (18-10), who have the tournament’s top seed and have won seven of their last eight games.
St. Joseph’s, which finished first in the East Division, avoided a second consecutive quarterfinal upset in the tournament. Last year, the Hawks were 27-0 before losing to Xavier 87-67 in the A10 tournament quarterfinals in Dayton.
Andres Sandoval and Jermaine Bucknor each scored 11 points to lead the Spiders (14-15), who had the third-worst record in the tournament field.
Mallon averaged 3.1 points per game during the regular season. His previous career-high was nine at La Salle on January 15. He scored 12 points in the first half, including a 3-pointer with 5:02 left that gave St. Joseph’s its largest lead, 30-18.
The Spiders fought back to cut the lead to 30-28 before halftime, but Carroll finished the half with five unanswered points. He and Mallon each sank three free throws while St. Joseph’s opened the second half with a 10-6 spurt for a 45-34 lead.
Carroll, one of the conference’s most accurate 3-point shooters, went only 3-of-14 from behind the arc. The senior guard had made 49.3 percent of his 3-point attempts in the last 17 games.
