A Fort Wayne police officer has resigned from the department after pleading guilty to a battery charge.

Charles Smith,28, punched a man in March after the victim, pulled over for drunk driving, refused to have his blood drawn for a blood alcohol test, according to a release from the Indiana State Police, the investigating agency.

Smith went to place the man in handcuffs and when the man pulled away, Smith punched the man three times, causing a visible cut and swelling to the man’s forehead, the release said.

Smith pleaded guilty Wednesday in Allen Superior Court.

“As Chief of Police I am very disappointed regarding the incident that sparked this investigation,” Police Chief Steve Reed said in a statement Thursday.

“We recognize the necessity of having a community that is trusting, engaged, and respectful,” Reed said. “We have made great strides and taken many positive steps to foster this type of relationship with our community. As Chief, I promise you we will continue to work hard to improve what we have built.”
