SLAVE HERO-CREEK NAMING

COTTLEVILLE — A creek in an eastern Missouri county has been renamed to commemorate a slave who risked his life to provide information to the Union army during the Civil War. SENT: 290 words.

SUMMERS OFF-NURSES

ST. LOUIS — Some Missouri nurses will soon be able to take advantage of a pilot program that allows them to take summers off in an attempt to alleviate overstaffing issues. SENT: 280 words.

— MISSING WOMAN KILLED — Police say a Missouri woman missing for a week has been found dead in an eastern Kansas house, and a man has been arrested on suspicion of killing her.

— QUARRY DROWNING-MISSOURI — Authorities say a 21-year-old man has drowned at an eastern Missouri quarry.

— CHILD PORN-SENTENCE — A Kansas City man who possessed more than 6,500 images of child pornography has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison.

— SODOMY-LIFE SENTENCE — A 58-year-old northwest Missouri man has been sentenced to life in prison for first-degree sodomy.

— MEAT CLEAVER-ROBBERY — A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for using a meat cleaver to rob a smoke shop and convenience store in St. Joseph.

— MUSKOGEE-BALLOONING — Fans of hot air balloons can add Muskogee to their list of spots for the high-flying fun.

ST. LOUIS — Rookie John Flaherty starts for the St. Louis Cardinals as they try and continues their season-long dominance of the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday afternoon. Luis Castillo starts for the Reds. By Steve Overbey.

BBA--ROYALS-WHITE SOX

CHICAGO — Reynaldo Lopez and the Chicago White Sox continue their series against Danny Duffy and the Kansas City Royals. Lopez is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA in his last four starts.
