Kariuki, Radcliffe Win

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) _ Kenya’s James Kariuki pulled away from the field two-thirds into the race in winning an 8-kilometer cross country race at Mallusk Saturday, and Britain’s Paula Radcliffe won the women’s 4.8k event.

Kariuki held off a late spurt from Britain’s Chris Sweeney and clocked 24 minutes, 2 seconds. Sweeney was timed in 24:04 and third-place finisher Cormac Finnerty of Ireland ran 24:06.

Radcliffe gained her second triumph in a row. This time, she pulled away from Kenya’s Rose Cheruiyot 800 meters from the finish, clocking 16:02.

Cheruiyot was timed in 16:06, ahead of Romania’s Elena Fidatov, third in 16:19.
