Netanyahu Opens U.S. Speaking Tour

September 29, 1999

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked about a need for a strong and economically stable Israel as he opened a U.S. public speaking tour, expected to net him a five-figure income for each appearance.

More than 10,000 people paid to attend a conference Tuesday where Netanyahu, former President Ford, country singer Naomi Judd and others gave motivational speeches touching on everything from how to burn body fat to how to succeed at business.

It was Netanyahu’s first of many appearances planned on the U.S. circuit, said Shai Bazak, Israel’s top diplomat in Florida. He earned $60,000 for the 30-minute speech, Israel’s Yediot Aharonot newspaper reported.

Netanyahu, who lost his re-election bid in May, told the crowd there were advantages to being defeated: more time with family, more sleep and ``you get to read about the other guy’s problems for a change.″
