October 28, 1995

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) _ Freshman tailback Terence Stokes ran for 142 yards and a touchdown to help power Western Carolina to 31-14 win over VMI on Saturday.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Catamounts (3-5, 2-4 Southern Conference).

Stokes saw his first significant action of the season after a preseason knee injury. It was the first time a Catamount running back had surpassed 100 yards since Darryl Jackson ran for 200 yards against Mars Hill in 1988. Stokes gained 81 yards in the fourth quarter and 111 yards in the second half.

Western Carolina’s defense held Thomas Haskins, the Southern Conference’s leading rusher, to 99 yards on 19 carries. His third-quarter scoring run drew the Keydets (3-5, 2-3 SC) to 17-14 at the end of the period.

Two fourth-quarter scoring drives broke open the game.

Fullback Michael Steward capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run with 11:23 to play. Stokes added a cushion for Western Carolina when he ran 4 yards for a score with 5:29 left.
