By SAUL A. FLORES News WestMay 26, 2019

NEEDLES — Ryly Payson is the first female graduate of Needles High School to be accepted into a military academy.

Payson was accepted into the Air Force Academy and will leave for Colorado Springs on June 24.

“It is my pleasure today to represent the United States Air Force and a privilege to present an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.,” read Major Jeffery West from a prepared statement. “This appointment is going to a very deserving young woman and is equivalent to a four-year full ride scholarship at a top tier university. The appointments to the Air Force Academy are very competitive. More than 10,000 each year apply. Students not only excel in academics, leadership and service but they must also secure a nomination from a member of congress, vice president or president of the United States. The Air Force Academy only accepts the best of the best and this year out of the 10,000 only 1,150 were appointed to enter the Air Force Academy. So you can see how truly outstanding this young lady is.”
