Mayor Agrees to Blood Tests in Paternity Suit
DETROIT (AP) _ Mayor Coleman A. Young has agreed to submit to blood tests to determine if he fathered the 6-year-old son of a former city official.
Blood samples will be taken from Young, 70, and the boy’s mother, Annivory Calvert, 34, within 30 days, a court spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Genetic material from the samples will be analyzed to determine whether Young is the father of Joel Loving. Experts say such tests are virtually error-free.
Calvert alleges she had a relationship with the twice-divorced mayor from 1980-87, when she was assistant director of Detroit’s Department of Public Works. She is seeking an unspecified amount in child support.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit has confirmed that a baptismal certificate lists him as the boy’s father.
