PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A coroner says an inmate at a Pennsylvania prison hanged himself in his cell just weeks after he was convicted of rape and murder in the death of a graduate student.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/2oukAst ) 58-year-old James Harris was found unresponsive April 13 in his cell at the state prison in Graterford. He was taken to Einstein Montgomery Hospital and pronounced dead.

The west Philadelphia maintenance man was convicted March 29 in the July 2015 strangulation death of 27-year-old Drexel student Jasmine Wright. Before he was sentenced, Harris denied he was responsible.

Harris was serving life without parole plus 30 to 60 more years. He had been convicted by a judge after waiving his right to a jury trial in order to avoid the death penalty.
