Aspinwall paving likely to begin in September
Aspinwall is gearing up for a brief paving season.
Council on Aug. 8 awarded a summer road improvement contract for $82,750 to Gibsonia-based Shields Asphalt Paving.
The project includes Brilliant Avenue from Second to Fourth Street and Western Avenue from Alley B to Alley C, Manager Melissa Lang-O’Malley said.
Councilwoman Lara Voytko told audience members the bid came in low enough that council could add its list of alternates to the project.
Council earlier this year was struggling to compile a comprehensive list of road repairs after members voted to cut the borough’s paving budget by 30 percent. Council whacked the paving budget from $100,000 to $70,000, with president Tim McLaughlin saying members had to focus on balancing the 2018 spending plan without raising taxes.
The alternates will be paid with money leftover from last year’s paving budget, officials said. Additional roads to be paved include Fourth Street from Western to Field, 11th street from Center to Guyasuta and Delafield Road from Fourth Street to the area beneath the Route 28 overpass. There also will be two areas patched in the 100 block of Second Street.
O’Malley said she will schedule a preconstruction meeting this month and work will likely start in late September. Paving should last about a week.
