S. Illinois 48, Nicholls St. 20
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) _ Danny Smith ran a yard for a touchdown and combined with Damon Jones on a 65-yard scoring pass Saturday as Southern Illinois beat Nicholls State 48-20.
Southern Illinois (2-2) took advantage of five turnovers, three leading to touchdowns, in breaking a 10-game losing streak at McAndrew Stadium.
Southern Illinois took the lead for good in the first quarter on Smith’s 1-yard run with 9:13 left in the quarter. Ryan Given’s 27-yard field goal made it 10-0 before a 34-yard pass from Henri Ransefore to Jonathan Terrell cut the lead to 10-7 with 15 seconds left in the quarter.
Darnell Hendricks picked off Ransefore’s pass at the 9:04 mark and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. After Given kicked another 27-yard field goal, Tony Seman scooped up a fumble and ran 63 yards for a touchdown with only 10 seconds left to give Southern Illinois a 27-7 halftime lead.
Smith ended the scoring with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Jones.
