NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol has charged a motorist in a crash that killed a passenger in his car.

The patrol tells news sources that multiple charges were filed against 21-year-old Zaire Calvert of New Bern, including driving while license revoked and reckless driving.

Troopers say Calvert was driving north on U.S. 17 in Craven County on Saturday when his car ran off the road and hit a tree.

Calvert was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. His passenger, 22-year-old Steven Richardson, Jr., of New Bern, was trapped in the vehicle. Emergency personnel freed Richardson from the vehicle and took him to a hospital, where he died.
