Virginia Player Convicted; No Jail
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ A freshman football player at Virginia was convicted Thursday of misdemeanor assault and battery against a female student and given a 30-day suspended jail sentence.
Antwoine Womack, 19, denied fondling Nefertiti Leach during a party at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house early on Nov. 9, but General District Judge William G. Barkley believed the woman’s version of what happened.
Womack also was ordered to stay out of trouble for two years.
There was no immediate word on whether the university or its athletic department planned any additional sanctions against Womack.
Womack, a star tailback at Phoebus High School, rushed 44 times for 208 yards this season in five games.
