MOURNERS PAY RESPECTS TO ARETHA FRANKLIN
DETROIT (AP) — Mourners began pouring into Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Tuesday to pay their final respects to Aretha Franklin. They approached her gold-plated casket to the sounds of her gospel recordings. She was in repose, dressed in red from head to high-heeled shoes, legs crossed at the ankles. As they approached, people who came from as far away as Las Vegas and Miami cried, crossed themselves, bowed their heads or blew kisses. Museum board member Kelly Major Green said the goal was to create a dignified and respectful environment akin to a church, the place where Franklin got her start.

JOHN GOODMAN GUESSES HE’S ‘MOPEY’ WIDOWER IN ‘ROSEANNE’ SPINOFF
LOS ANGELES (AP) — John Goodman is speculating that this fall’s “Roseanne” spinoff will mean curtains for the matriarch played by Roseanne Barr. In an interview with the Sunday Times of London, Goodman said he wasn’t sure how the new series, titled “The Conners,” will be structured. But he guessed that his character will be “mopey and sad” because his wife has died. Goodman played husband Dan Conner to Barr’s character on ABC’s original “Roseanne” and last season’s revival. The network fired Barr after she posted a racist tweet, which she apologized for but has said was misinterpreted. Goodman said he’s certain Barr isn’t a racist. “The Conners” spinoff was announced by ABC after Barr agreed to relinquish any participation in it. A representative for Goodman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
“WEIRD AL” YANKOVIC GETS STAR ON HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME
LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Weird Al” Yankovic accepted his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday with an apology to Robert DeNiro. Yankovic jokes that DeNiro will not get his star until next year and he “has been very vocal about the fact that it would be criminally unfair for him to get a star before me.” Yankovic also says he could have gotten his star ten or twenty years ago, but he told the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce he “specifically wanted the 2,643rd star and it took a while for that number to come up on rotation.”

LOUIS C.K. IS BACK ON STAGE
NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Louis C.K. has returned to the stage for apparently the first time after he admitted to engaging in sexual misconduct. He made an unannounced appearance Sunday night at the Comedy Cellar in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The club’s owner, Noam Dworman, told the New York Times he watched a video of the appearance. He says the 50-year-old was “very relaxed” and was greeted by an ovation from the audience. He says he performed “typical Louis C.K. stuff.” Five women last November accused the comedian of inappropriate behavior. He released a statement in which he said the stories were true and he expressed remorse for his actions. The actions resulted in the end of a production deal with FX Networks and the cancellation of a movie release.
GIRL VISITED BY DRAKE GETS HEART TRANSPLANT
CHICAGO (AP) — A suburban Chicago girl has received a heart transplant just days after she danced her way into a hospital visit from Drake. Surgeons performed the transplant on 11-year-old Sofia Sanchez on Monday at Chicago’s Lurie Children’s Hospital. The Canadian rapper visited Sofia there after seeing a video of her dancing in a hospital hallway to his song, “In My Feelings.” The video inspired a viral dance craze. Cardiovascular surgeon Carl Backer says Sofia’s nine-hour surgery went extremely well, although the first 48 hours after are critical. A Facebook video shows Sofia being told of the transplant on Sunday and then exclaiming “I’m getting a heart, Mom? Oh my God!”

HARVEY WEINSTEIN APPEALS JUDGE’S CASTING COUCH RULING
NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for Harvey Weinstein want to appeal a court ruling that lets an aspiring actress’ lawsuit equating Hollywood’s casting couch to sex trafficking move forward. The lawyers filed papers in Manhattan federal court Monday asking a judge to let them immediately appeal his ruling two weeks ago that gave the lawsuit the green light. Kadian Noble said that Weinstein molested her in 2014 in a Cannes, France, hotel room. Judge Robert Sweet ruled that the lawsuit was fairly brought under sex trafficking laws because the proverbial casting couch could be considered a “commercial sex act.” Weinstein’s lawyers argued there was no legal precedent for the ruling. They said the sex trafficking statute could not be used if there was no allegation of trafficking women.
ROTTEN TOMATOES TAKES STEPS TO DIVERSIFY CRITICS POOL
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes is attempting to diversify its film critic pool after a recent study found the site’s reviews of top-grossing movies were heavily male-dominated. The company says Tuesday it’s expanding criteria to be a “Tomatometer-approved critic” and giving $100,000 to non-profit organizations to help offset the cost of attending film festivals. The first $25,000 is going toward sending critics to the Toronto International Film Festival in September. An Annenberg Inclusion Initiative survey of Rotten Tomatoes-complied reviews for last year’s top box-office hits found that nearly 80 percent of critics were male. Rotten Tomatoes executives say the company is committed to advancing inclusion in criticism. The company will now look at an individual’s body of work, including on new media platforms, instead of a critic’s outlet or employer.
