Domenici Apologizes to Mikulski for Joke
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., has apologized to Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, D- Md., for making a joke about her during a dinner at a Washington all-male club last weekend.
Domenici, speaking at the Alfalfa Club’s annual dinner Saturday night, jokingly claimed to be so electrifying that ″just like the singer Tom Jones, women often throw their panties at me when I speak. It happened again just yesterday. I just don’t know what got into Senator Mikulski.″
The dinner, which was attended this year by 650 businessmen and government officials, is billed as strictly for laughs and traditionally is closed to the press.
But The Washington Post, citing sources, reported the joke. Ms. Mikulski, who won election to the Senate last November, said she found it ″outrageous″ and ″insulting,″ and not particularly funny.
In a joint statement released by both senators on Monday, Domenici told Ms. Mikulski that he was sorry if he offended her and that his remarks were not meant to be offensive.
Ms. Mikulski accepted Domenici’s apology. Both senators agreed that, as far as they were concerned, the episode was over.
Domenici said his phone call to Mikulski from the Senate floor was ″very pleasant .... I always was told she was a good sport.″
