Gary Brown signs one-year deal with Chargers
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Running back Gary Brown agreed to a one-year contract Tuesday with the San Diego Chargers, who ranked 29th in rushing in the NFL last season.
Brown, a free agent, did not play football in 1996 but was with the Houston Oilers from 1991-95, rushing for 2,115 yards and 12 touchdowns on 477 carries.
In 1993, he rushed for 1,002 yards and six TDs and caught 21 passes for 240 yards and two TDs.
Brown will be reunited with Kevin Gilbride and Frank Novak. Gilbride, the Chargers’ new coach, was the Oilers’ assistant head coach for much of the time Brown was with the Oilers, and Novak, the Chargers’ special teams coach, was his position coach in Houston.
Brown was originally selected by Houston in the eighth round of the 1991 NFL draft.
