McAllen man found dead of gunshot on South Padre Island

October 9, 2018

Authorities are investigating the death of a 68-year-old McAllen man found with an apparent gunshot wound early Monday morning in the water just north of Andie Bowie Park.

The Cameron County Park Rangers said in a press release that a concerned citizen called authorities around 7 a.m. to report an unresponsive man found in the water on the shoreline.

Cameron County Park Ranger Chief Horacio Zamora said investigators have not determined whether the unidentified man was a murder victim or whether the man committed suicide.

“We don’t know yet,” Zamora said.

Cameron County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Bennie Ochoa III ordered an autopsy.

Zamora said the autopsy will help the Park Rangers determine whether someone killed the man or whether the man took his own life.

Authorities did not find a weapon, Zamora said.

The Cameron County Rangers are investigating the death along with the South Padre Island Police Department.

Identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
