Manteno ends farmers market
Manteno will not have a farmers market this year because of declining attendance throughout the past few years.
Last year, the village tried to improve the market’s attendance by switching it from Thursday night to Tuesday night. It also moved the market from a lot at the intersection of Main and Division to The Square on Second.
However, none of those changes worked. Several vendors said they felt it was because the market was on a weeknight.
“It just wasn’t well-attended,” said Sarah Marion, the village’s event coordinator. “The first few weeks were busy last year, but attendance dropped as the year went on.”
Marion said the village would not consider moving the market to the weekend because of the Kankakee Farmers Market.
“We do not want to take away from Kankakee’s market,” Marion said. “They have a very good market run by a great committee. We are promoting people to go to the Kankakee market because they have great things there.”
Without the farmers market, the village will continue to focus on its downtown events, such as Rockin’ on the Square and Movies in the Park.
“We are really going to amp up those events,” Marion said. “There is a demand for those kinds of events here. So, that’s what we are going to do.”
