Mohave sweeps River Valley
MOHAVE VALLEY — The Mohave High School Lady T-birds swept their cross-town rival Lady Dust Devils 25-11, 25-21, 24-16 at River Valley High School on Wednesday night.
“It’s not always about the score,” T-birds head coach Radic Zdenko said. “It is about being loud and exciting game where there is so many fans on both sides and they just make it a great environment for kids to play and for us to coach.
“It’s fun to be part of that atmosphere of those games.”
Mohave took 8-3 and 17-10 advantages as it cruised to its first-set victory, as T-birds senior Bree Lipinski served the final eight points — two aces — and senior Lilly Bouchard and sophomore Oakley Heaton were very active during the set-ending run.
Senior Hailey Sischo, junior Megan Burns and sophomore Zoey Bruner were active for River Valley.
The Dust Devils took 3-0 and 16-11 second-set leads as Burns served the first three points, but the T-birds went on a 9-0 run late in the set to turn a 21-16 deficit into a 25-21 victory.
T-birds senior Natalie Willmore recorded one kill, eight service points, three aces and sophomore Hannah Burgess recorded the set-ending point.
Sophomore Maya Radic set, served and spiked the ball well for Mohave.
The score went back and forth until it was 8-8 in the third set and Mohave took a 14-9 lead, but River Valley cut the deficit to 19-16. That’s when Mohave reeled off the final six points for the win. Sophomore Ashley Salazar recorded a five-point service run — two aces — and Oakley recorded the set-, match-winning point.
