Man Charged In Pittston Stabbing

May 3, 2019

A man stabbed and wounded a woman at a Pittston apartment early Thursday morning, according to police.

Officers responded to a reported stabbing at 3 Butler St. at 12:32 a.m., police said in an affidavit.

According to the affidavit, officers found a woman lying on the floor of a Luzerne County Transportation Authority bus parked nearby. They also found Delton Kirkland, 34, kneeling in the roadway near the bus with his hands over his head.

Kirkland told an officer he is a diabetic and bi-polar, adding, “the knife is under the futon,” the affidavit states.

Emergency medical crews treated the woman, who was bleeding profusely, and took her to a local hospital by ambulance.

The bus driver told police the woman had run up to the parked bus, yelling for help, and was allowed onto the bus. Kirkland also ran up to the bus, but was not allowed inside, the driver said.

Officers searched the apartment where the reported stabbing took place, which is rented by the victim. They found blood on the floor and bloody footprints.

During an interview with police, Kirkland admitted he stabbed the woman, the affidavit states.

Police had responded to a domestic incident between Kirkland and the victim on April 16.

In that incident, Kirkland was charged with simple assault and released on unsecured bail, on condition that he have no contact with the victim. He failed to appear for a preliminary hearing on the assault charge scheduled for Tuesday, the affidavit states.

For the alleged stabbing this morning, police charged Kirkland with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and possession of a weapon.

He was arraigned and sent to Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 7.
