All 5 of West Virginia’s ski resorts to open for the season
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — All five of West Virginia’s ski resorts will be open this weekend in one of the earliest starts to the state’s winter sports season.
This week’s cold temperatures and natural snowfall have helped resorts’ snow-making efforts, allowing one of their best season debuts in recent history, the West Virginia Ski Areas Association told multiple news outlets.
Canaan Valley, Timberline Four Seasons, Winterplace and Oglebay will all be open by Saturday, with some opening Friday. Snowshoe Mountain had opened for Thanksgiving.
Snowshoe Mountain is the state’s largest and highest-elevated ski resort at 4,848 feet (1,478 meters). Snowshoe will have the most open terrain it has had by mid-December in more than a decade, resort spokesman Shawn Cassell told The Charleston Gazette-Mail .
The resorts have more than 800,000 visitors annually during the season, creating a $250 million economic impact and 5,000 jobs. The season traditionally begins in late November and continues to early April.
West Virginia is a getaway for many visitors from Southern states seeking places other than the beaches they live near, association president Terry Pfeiffer told The Herald-Dispatch of Huntington. Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio are the states where most skiers and snowboarders visiting West Virginia are from.
