Michigan State’s Cleaves Injured

August 28, 1998

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) _ Michigan State guard Mateen Cleaves, the Big Ten player of the year, sustained a slight shoulder separation in a fall.

Cleaves, unable to play in the recent World Championships because of an ankle sprain, was injured about 7 p.m. Wednesday when he tumbled down stairs at an apartment complex, the school said Thursday.

``This is an unfortunate incident for Mateen,″ Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. ``Him being involved in a freak accident is disappointing.

``However, knowing Mateen he’ll bounce back and will be working on his leg strength and conditioning in preparations for the upcoming season.″

Cleaves is expected to return in time for workouts in mid-October.
