Newly-built Spearfish McDonald’s to open soon

August 3, 2018

SPEARFISH — Those in Spearfish desiring to satisfy their McDonald’s cravings don’t have long to wait: The hope is that the newly-built restaurant at 131 Ryan Rd. will be open and operating no later than Monday.

Calvin Dardis, owner, said that when people see cars in the parking lot, they’ll know that the restaurant, sporting an updated look, color scheme, and décor, is open. While he hopes that can happen Friday, it may be Saturday, or even Monday, before the restaurant opens, and then the plan is to host an official grand opening Monday, Aug. 13, following the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

While the new building does not include a play area, it is kid-friendly, Dardis said, and there are a couple of enhancements that are new to Spearfish restaurants.

“We do have a double drive-thru; we’ve never had that before,” Dardis said.

Another update to the restaurant is digital kiosks in the lobby that allow patrons to electronically input their order.

“Those are kind of the two big additions,” Dardis said.

The new building consists of about the same footprint as the former building, which was built in 1981 and demolished in April, with the rebuild taking place since, and while the original hope was to re-open in July, the rainy spring delayed the construction schedule a bit.

While the Spearfish McDonald’s previously employed about 55 employees, Dardis hopes to get up to 90 employees in the newly-built space.

“So we’re going to keep hiring and keep hiring,” he said, encouraging prospective employees to give him a call at 645-9585 to set up an interview.

“It’ll be so much more efficient,” Dardis said of the new building.

Dardis previously explained that all of the McDonald’s that were built in the same era as the former building are getting rebuilt in a more contemporary fashion, as the chain updates the franchises around the nation.

According to the April 2018 Building Permit Report from the city’s Building Department, the approximate cost for the demolition and new construction of the Spearfish McDonald’s was $2.8 million.
