Mob Beats Teen to Death After He Fatally Shoots Youth
VAL VERDE, Calif. (AP) _ Angry onlookers beat a man to death with fence posts after he killed a teen-ager with a shotgun blast to the face and fired at a crowd, wounding three people, authorities said.
Gerardo Valle, 17, of Val Verde, was shot and killed early Sunday as he attempted to break up a fight between two youths outside a party, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Chris Robbins.
David Mota, 20, of Pacoima, grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun from his car when he saw Valle intervene, and shot once, blasting Valle in the face, Robbins said.
He then turned and fired two to three shots at the crowd of 30 to 60 people, Robbins said.
″The remaining portion of the crowd charged Mota, jumped him and started beating him with a fence post,″ Robbins said. ″They beat him to death in the street.″ Mota died of massive head injuries, said Sgt. Irene McReynolds.
The three people wounded were in fair condition Sunday night at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, said nursing supervisor Susan Whitelock.
It was unknown how many people participated in the beating, nor what triggered the initial fight, said detectives in this mostly lower-income community of 1,200 residents 45 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The mob dispersed before deputies arrived.
″No one has been arrested, but a lot of people were interviewed,″ McReynolds said Sunday night.
Investigators were trying to determine if the fight or shootings were related to the party, Robbins said.
