Burglar beats 72-year-old man during break-in at couple’s home in Cleveland’s Broadway-Slavic Village

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An unidentified burglar beat a 72-year-old man and threatened his 64-year-old wife during a home invasion Friday in Cleveland’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood, police said.

No arrests have been made in the incident that happened about 10:15 p.m. at a home on East 65th Street near Forman Avenue, police said Monday morning.

The husband refused medical treatment after the incident, and his wife was not harmed, a police report says.

The incident happened just blocks from where a 94-year-old woman was beaten to death and her 74-year-old daughter was severely hurt during a Sept. 17 home invasion on Gertrude Avenue. Detectives have not found any connection between the two incidents at this time, police said Monday.

The more recent home invasion happened shortly after the 64-year-old wife heard a noise that sounded like something being broken outside her house. She saw a side door open so she went to close it, according to a police report.

She noticed that a light above the door was out. She reached up and discovered someone unscrewed it, so she fixed it and turned on the light.

The burglar suddenly poked his head out from behind the door. The wife yelled at him to go away, but he walked toward her, the police report says.

The wife grabbed a wooden pole she keeps by the door, and hit the burglar with it, the police report says.

The husband came to the door to see what was going on, but the burglar shoved the couple back into the home. The husband and wife both fell on the floor, the police report says.

The burglar grabbed the wooden pole from the wife’s hands. He repeatedly beat the husband with it as the wife pleaded with him to stop, the police report says.

The burglar stopped beating the husband and pulled a small knife out of his pocket. He told the couple to get up and walk into the living room.

The burglar took the wife’s purse and dumped its contents on the floor, but he did not take anything from it. He took $45 from the kitchen and $15 from another purse before he left the home, the police report says.

He said “we’ll come back later” before he ran away, the police report says.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Cleveland police detectives at 216-623-5418, police said.
