Meyersdale man wanted on burglary, arson charges

December 28, 2018

A Meyersdale-area man is wanted on felony charges that he stole firearms from a Greenville Township residence and attempted to set the home on fire.

Derek Allen Schardt, 29, is believed to be armed and dangerous, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said Schardt and Courtney Horning forced their way into a house in Greenville Township on Dec. 7 and stole two rifles, two bows and other items.

Police said Schardt then attempted to set the residence on fire.

Schardt later broke into the garage and stole a John Deere Gator and two chain saws. Police said he rolled the Gator while fleeing the scene, set the utility vehicle on fire and left it to burn in the roadway.

Police identified Kenneth Halverson and David Kuhn as the victims.

There is an active felony arrest warrant for Schardt on charges of burglary, arson, theft, criminal mischief and receiving stolen property. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the state police at 814-445-4104.

Charges against Horning are pending a determination by the district attorney, according to Trooper Jeremy Lischak, the investigating officer.
