CHICAGO (AP) _ Century Aluminum Co. (CENX) on Wednesday reported second-quarter net income of $17.9 million.

The Chicago-based company said it had net income of 20 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 32 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 24 cents per share.

The aluminum producer posted revenue of $470 million in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $458.9 million.

Century shares have decreased 34 percent since the beginning of the year. The stock has decreased 22 percent in the last 12 months.
