Man sentenced to death in kidnap-killing of California teen

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California jury has sentenced a man to death for kidnapping and killing a 17-year-old girl as she walked to a friend’s house in 2010.

The same jurors last week convicted 42-year-old Jesse Torres of first-degree murder for the death of Norma Lopez in Riverside County.

The district attorney’s office says the panel deliberated about an hour Wednesday before deciding on the death penalty.

The judge scheduled an April 12 Atkins hearing for Torres. An Atkins hearing is held when the defense alleges their client has a mental or intellectual disability that disqualifies him or her from receiving a death sentence.

Prosecutors say Torres kidnapped the teenager as she walked from summer school to a friend’s house.

Her body was found five days later in an olive grove.

DNA linked Torres to the killing.
