Turnpike bridge work delayed
A contractor canceled plans to close a bridge over the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Somerset this weekend because of previous bad weather.
“We had to postpone due to the winter storm that hit the area last week,” Renee Vid Colborn, a public information manager for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, wrote in an email to the Daily American. “It didn’t allow crews to finish the prep work needed for the bridge beam placement. The contractor now has to wait until after the holiday to resume work.”
The turnpike was supposed to be closed between the New Stanton and Breezewood interchanges Saturday night and Sunday morning to allow crews to safely erect steel bridge beams for the new North Center Avenue bridge. Drivers are using a temporary bridge to span the turnpike in Somerset.
Colborn said a new closing date will be announced after Thanksgiving.
