Steelers coach Mike Tomlin coy about adding outside linebacker before opener

Steelers linebacker Keion Adams drops Titans running back David Fluellen Saturday Aug. 25, 2018 at Heinz Field.

When rookie undrafted free agent Ola Adeniyi was placed on injured reserve Monday, it left the Steelers with only three outside linebackers on the 53-man roster.

Tomlin said he is “comfortable” with the depth at the position. Anthony Chickillo is the only backup behind starters T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree.

Tomlin smiled when asked if the Steelers are comfortable enough to go with just three players at the position Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

“I didn’t say that,” Tomlin said. “I just said I was comfortable. I’m not going to disclose my plan, but I’m comfortable.”

The Steelers could fortify the position by promoting a player from the practice squad. Two outside linebackers are among the 11-man group: second-year players Farrington Huguenin and Keion Adams.

Huguenin spent last season on the practice squad. Adams was on injured reserve.
