Newsmaker finalists announced
The Press Club of Southeast Texas has picked five finalists for its Newsmaker of the Year award.
The finalists are:
Keith Carter, a photographer and Lamar University teacher who published his 13th book in 2018.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, who has led the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont since 2000 and reached the church’s retirement age for his position in 2018.
W.T. Johnston, Newton Eagles’ head football coach, who won his second consecutive state title with help from his son and assistant coach while suffering from a life-threatening illness.
DeAndre Nico, a Port Arthur native who made it to the later rounds of “The Voice” and was widely praised despite a controversial elimination by coach Adam Levine.
Paula O’Neal, who announced her retirement from Some Other Place after 35 years leading the organization, which provides food, clothing and other vital services to “needy” residents in Beaumont.
The finalists are chosen by the members of the Press Club, which has members from news media, public relations and academia in the region, according to a club news release.
The winner, who received the most weighted votes, will be revealed June 7 at the club’s annual Excellence in the Media banquet, according to the release.
