WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Redskins safety Montae Nicholson has been arrested in connection with a fight at a restaurant and retail complex near the team’s practice facility in Ashburn, Virginia. The Loudon (LOW’-dun) County Sheriff’s Office says Nicholson was charged with assault and battery and being drunk in public after his arrest early Tuesday morning. Nicholson was released on $2,500 bond. The Redskins say they are gathering more information.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera hasn’t ruled out shutting down quarterback Cam Newton for the season because of a sore right throwing shoulder. Rivera says he plans to meet with Newton later in the week and figure out where he is “in terms of his physical state and mental state” before deciding if he will start Sunday against Atlanta. Carolina lost to New Orleans Monday night, 12-9.
CHICAGO (AP) — The last-place Chicago Blackhawks will be without one of their top defensemen for a while after they decided to loan Henri Jokiharju to Finland for the upcoming world junior championship. The 19-year-old Jokiharju has no goals and 11 assists in 32 games in his first NHL season. Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton says he thinks the move will help Jokiharju’s long-term development.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins will retire Joe Mauer’s Number 7 jersey next season, moving swiftly with to honor the six-time All-Star who retired after a 15-year major league career. The Twins surprised Mauer with the announcement while he was being celebrated at an all-student assembly at his alma mater Cretin-Derham Hall High School on Tuesday.
