Father, Sister, Held in Shooting of Ill Woman

August 8, 1989

WESTLAND, Mich. (AP) _ A man shot his obese daughter to put an end to high medical bills for her treatment but brought her to a hospital two hours later when she didn’t die, police said.

Anna Kwiatkowski, 34, was in serious condition today at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, said hospital spokeswoman Susan Lathers.

The victim’s father, Valentine, 78, and her sister, Carol, 43, were arraigned on attempted murder charges. Bail was set a $50,000.

The victim, who weighed 360 pounds and suffered from asthma, was shot twice in the head, Lt. John Reddy said.

Police from from Westland, a Detroit suburb, were called to the hospital Sunday and told that the father and daughter had brought in the wounded woman.

″In talking to the father, he told them that they had shot her, the reason being mounting medical bills,″ Reddy said. ″She didn’t die, so two hours later they brought her to the hospital.″

Valentine Kwiatkowski fired the shots at close range with a .32-caliber handgun as his daughter lay in bed, Sgt. Robert Barthold said.

The victim later asked to be taken to the hospital, where the father and sister talked about what they had done, ″and they said they would take their lives, too,″ Barthold said.

A neighbor said the Kwiatkowski house was the scene of frequent fights.

″They would slap each other around and cause a real ruckus,″ said Evelyn Fagan.
