Funerals held for 2 killed in Toronto mass shooting

TORONTO (AP) — Mourners bid goodbye Monday to the two victims slain in the mass shooting in Toronto’s Greektown neighborhood.

Eighteen-year-old Reese Fallon and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis were laid to rest in separate private funeral services. The two were killed and 13 were wounded when gunman Faisal Hussain walked along a busy street firing indiscriminately into restaurants and cafes on July 22. His family has said he suffered from lifelong “severe mental health challenges.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on hand at the funeral home where mourners came to pay their respects to Fallon. The recent high school graduate who was due to study nursing in university this fall. Further north in Markham, Ontario, people arrived at a Greek Orthodox church for a service to honor Kozis.

The girl’s family issued a brief statement expressing gratitude for the community’s support but requesting privacy.

Shortly after attending Fallon’s funeral, an emotional Trudeau said that watching the youthful mourners brought back personal recollections of the memorial service for his own brother, Michel, who died 20 years ago at age 23 in an avalanche.

Trudeau placed flowers at a makeshift memorial for the victims of the attack.

Kozis, who neighbors described as an outgoing and athletic child, was on a family outing on Danforth Avenue when she was caught in the hail of bullets. .

Fallon died while enjoying a night out with friends, including fellow members of the Young Liberals youth political organization.

Pink and purple flowers covered Fallon’s casket as it was placed in a hearse after the service.

Some of Fallon’s friends, as well as Kozis’ father, are believed to be among the 13 people injured in Hussain’s attack. The gunman himself was found dead shortly after exchanging gunfire with two police officers.

A fountain at the small Alexander the Great park, where some of the victims were shot, was ringed with bouquets, candles, stuffed animals and other mementos.

Boxes of chalk were left for mourners to leave messages of love and remembrance.
