CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: McKenna Tops The Field, Lake-Lehman Tops The Meet

At Lake-Lehman, Valley West sophomore Tavian McKenna won a season-opening tri-meet in 18 minutes, 30 seconds as his Spartans picked up a win, 24-33 over Tunkhannock, Wednesday in Wyoming Valley Conference cross country.

Lake-Lehman placed eight straight boys between fourth through 11th place as the team defeated both Valley West (25-36) and Tunkhannock (20-43). Neil Dougherty took fourth in 19:49.

Peter Sayre paced Tunkhannock in second place at 18:40.

Lake-Lehman’s girls also swept both meets, 27-30 over Valley West and 25-31 over Tunkhannock. The Black Knights’ Lauryn Pembleton won the race in 25:04, followed by teammates Tasha Mihalko and Morgan Patla.

Valley West’s Autum Gaylord took fourth in 25:53, and her team topped Tunkhannock, 19-36. Madelyn Franko was Tunkhannock’s fastest runner, taking fifth (25:54).

At Kirby Park, Dominick Angradi won by 57 seconds in 18:09 as he and Pittston Area cruised to a win in its WVC opener.

Nicole Zambetti won the girls meet and took fifth overall in 19:51, too, leading the Patriots’ girls to their win.

The race was shortened to 2.85 miles due to Wednesday’s heat.

Nate Searfoss took third for Coughlin’s boys, and Emma Fortune placed second in the girls meet at 20:50 to lead the Crusaders’ girls.

At Kirby Park, Bryce Zapusek’s 16:55 paced the Royals to a big win in the boys meet. Cameron Marcinkowski was the first-place finisher for Redeemer in the girls race, in 21:26. Joey Rowley (sixth, 17:47) and Caitlyn Bly (fifth, 21:53) led the Hawkeyes’ boys and girls.

At Nanticoke Area, Levi Vick won the boys race on his home course, although the Trojans didn’t field a complete team.

Caleb Cumberland was runner-up and led Northwest. Griffin Keller took fourth to lead Berwick, with three teammates finishing right behind him. Maverick Kramer was Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech’s top runner.

In the girls’ race, Northwest’s Abigail Zielecki took first place.

Berwick’s Jaida Geiger led her team in third, and Makenzie Regan finished sixth for CMVT.

Dallas’ meet canceled;

MMI Prep’s rescheduled

Dallas will have to wait a week for its boys and girls teams to defend their undefeated WVC titles from a year ago. The Mountaineers’ home meet against Wyoming Area and Wyoming Seminary was canceled due to Wednesday’s heat and will not be rescheduled, according to Dallas’ website. Additionally, MMI Prep’s home meet against Crestwood and Hazleton Area was canceled due to thunderstorms. That meet will be scored during Hazleton Area’s home meet scheduled for Sept. 19
