Newspaper Worker Killed in Production Accident
ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) _ An employee of The Record of Hackensack was killed when he fell into a shredding machine at the newspaper’s production plant and someone turned it on, the newspaper reported Saturday.
Police investigators and company officials said Fabian W. Pesantes, 25, of Lodi had been attempting to clear a jam in the machine early Friday when he fell in.
″Other employees were in the area, but were not aware that he was in the chute, and turned on the machine,″ said Lois Ferguson, spokeswoman for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office. Pesantes died instantly, she said.
The machine is used to shred and compact old newspapers.
Robert Kulick, director of the Parsippany-Troy Hills office of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said his agency was trying to determine if safety standards and company operating procedures were followed. Robert Sapanara, the newspaper’s president, said company procedures require employees to stop the machine and disable its starting mechanism before anyone clears a jam.
