Young People’s Concert hosts 58th annual competition for soloist

HUNTINGTON — The Young People’s Concert is celebrating fifty eight years in providing students of Cabell County the opportunity to hear a free live orchestral performance.

The Woman’s Club of Huntington in cooperation with Cabell County Schools and Marshall University will sponsor the fifty eighth Open Competition for Soloist Jan. 13, 2019 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Smith Music Hall located at Marshall University’s campus.

All high school and middle school students, grades 7-12 in West Virginia and the Tri-State area are eligible to audition with a $20 application fee.

To audition, the student can have a composition for solo instrument or a voice piece with orchestral parts, which are available to rent.

There is a 12 minute time limit. One movement of a concerto is an appropriate choice and participants must have a well qualified accompanist, preferably someone who will enhance their performance.

Applications for the concert must be received no later than Jan. 7, 2019.

The winning performer must be available on the following dates to perform with the Marshall University Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Reed Smith: Monday, March 4, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. dress rehearsal, Smith Music Hall; Tuesday, March 5, 2019, Community and Family Concert; at 7:30 p.m., 2019, Smith Music Hall; and Thursday, March 7, 2019, 9 a.m., Young People’s Concert at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Snow date is Friday March 8, 2019.

Along with the honor of performing with the orchestra, the winner will receive an award of $150 from The Woman’s Club of Huntington.
