April 12, 2002

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) _ Hemmings Motor News is being sold to the publisher American City Business Journals Inc. for an undisclosed price.

American City, based in Charlotte, N.C., will keep the magazine, and its 120 employees, in Bennington, American City chief executive and chairman Ray Shaw said Thursday. Both companies are privately-held.

Hemmings is a monthly publication for hobbyists and collectors of antique, vintage and special interest cars with 650 to 750 pages of advertising each month for collector cars and parts, restoration services and tools, literature and car shows, and rallies.

The sale also includes two smaller magazines and a unit that publishes books, calendars, and other publishing products featuring old cars, affiliated publishing assets of Hemmings.

The sale, which is expected to be finalized May 1, comes just four months after the company’s former publisher and editor, Terry Ehrich, died at 60.

Ehrich brought the company to Bennington in 1970. While he was publisher of Hemmings, it grew from a four-page publication to one with a circulation of 223,000.

American City owns 41 metropolitan business journals, publishes two NASCAR magazines and five sports annuals, and operates almost 50 Web sites.
