American Women Win at Rugby
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ The United States and New Zealand scored overpowering victories Tuesday in the semifinals of the International Rugby Board’s first official World Cup for women.
Fullback and captain Jennifer Crawford led the Americans to a 46-6 victory over Canada with a hat-trick of tries while fly-half and kicker Jos Bergmann collected 16 points with five conversions and two penalty goals.
The United States crossed the Canadian line six times with Kim Kalei, Krista McFarren and Amy Westerman also touching down. Moira Shiels’ two penalty goals accounted for the Canadian scoring.
Favored New Zealand, led by center Annaleah Rush, overpowered England 44-11. Rush collected 24 points with two tries, four conversions and two penalty goals.
The United States and New Zealand will play for the championship on Saturday.
