Akron Zoo reveals naming contest results for musk deer fawn, penguin chick

AKRON, Ohio — Akron Zoo announced the winning names for its “Oh Deer! Waddle We Name Them?” contest that concluded Aug. 8.

The zoo asked the public to vote on names for its new Humboldt penguin chick and Siberian musk deer fawn. Rico was the name selected for the zoo’s male penguin chick. Alina was the winning name for the female musk deer fawn.

Rico, a Spanish name that translates to “brave ruler” in English, hatched June 1. The deer fawn’s name, pronounced “a-lee-nah,” translates to “beautiful” from Russian. Alina was born June 13.

The naming contest took place on the Akron Zoo’s website. Members of public were encouraged to choose between the names Guanay, Junio, Maximo, Pacifico and Rico for the penguin and Alina, Katia, Nadia and Svetlana for the fawn.

Both infant animals can now be viewed in their respective habitats at the zoo.

Akron Zoo is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Adults pay $12, seniors pay $10 and children 2-14 years old pay $9 for admission. Children younger than 2 years old can visit the zoo for free.
