November 25, 1997

MOSCOW (AP) _ Fire broke out today in the Admiralty building in St. Petersburg, damaging the top floors of the historic structure before being put out two hours later, Russian news reports said.

The fire, which began shortly after noon, damaged part of the third floor and attic, the ITAR-Tass and Interfax news agencies reported.

Two dozen fire engines were sent in to fight the fire, ITAR-Tass said.

The Admiralty was built in 1823 to house the Russian navy headquarters in what was then the capital of Russia. The building now houses local naval offices.
