Additional charges filed after Red Lodge-area homicide
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Prosecutors have filed additional charges against a Red Lodge man charged in a February killing.
The Billings Gazette reports 33-year-old Thomas Joseph Schifferns also is charged with theft, robbery and evidence tampering.
He earlier pleaded not guilty to deliberate homicide in Feb. 19 shooting death of 63-year-old James McGregor at a trailhead south of Red Lodge.
Monday’s charges allege Schifferns stole about $1,500 from McGregor at gunpoint before killing him and then threw the gun in a snowbank. Police later found the gun.
Schifferns is jailed in Bozeman with his bail set at $1 million. His trial is set for Sept. 24.
Prosecutors say Schifferns confessed to a former girlfriend that he shot someone in the head. He later denied killing McGregor, who had been staying with Schifferns’ common-law-wife and receiving meals and other help.
