3 Hospitalized in N.C. Bus Crash
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) _ A tour bus taking students on a field trip to Washington veered off a highway entrance ramp and crashed into a stand of trees Wednesday. Three adults were hospitalized.
The American Coach charter bus was carrying 22 Atlanta-area fifth-graders and 19 teachers, chaperones and parents when it left the Interstate 85 ramp near Kannapolis, about 25 miles north of Charlotte, shortly after midnight, said Dennis Mauney, a spokesman for the Cabarrus County emergency management office.
The 41 passengers and the driver were all taken to a Concord hospital but only three people were admitted, said spokeswoman Carol Lovin. A school secretary was being treated for a broken leg, the bus driver was under observation with an irregular heartbeat, and a third adult injured his right shoulder.
Some others were treated for minor injuries while others were checked out but were unhurt.
Officials from Roberta Smith Elementary School in Rex, Ga., were deciding whether the students would continue on their trip.
