Lady O finishes second at home invite
The Beatrice girls golf team finished second at their home invite Tuesday at Beatrice Country Club.
The Lady O finished with a team score of 431, which put them behind team champion Omaha Duchesne, who finished with a score of 351.
Beatrice finished ahead of Omaha Skutt (447), Norris (463), Fairbury (566)) as well as Wahoo and Platteview.
Beatrice Coach Dick Stuart said after finishing a stroke behind Omaha Skutt in a tournament last week, they set a goal of trying to finish ahead of them.
“We felt like we had a good chance of getting second,” Stuart said. “We didn’t play as well as we had hoped, but we found a way to get second. That’s a nice reward for our girls.”
Sydney Southwick led the way for Beatrice. her score of 97 was good enough for fourth place individually. She finished behind three Omaha Duchesne golfers. Lauren Goertz won the meet with a score of 79 while Anna Boor shot an 82 and Katie Speer shot a 93.
“Sydney came out relaxed and got off to a much better start,” Stuart said. “She played a lot of really good holes and just had a couple that hurt her, otherwise I think she would have been close to that 90 mark.”
Beatrice’s next best finisher was Payton Neunaber. Her score of 108 was good enough for 11th place.
“Once again, Payton just had that one big number on her last hole,” Stuart said. “Otherwise I think she would have been close to getting that 10th place medal. She just needs to work on her short game and eliminate big numbers.”
Finishing right behind her in 12th place was Mackenzie Barnard with a score of 112.
“Mackenzie was probably as frustrated as you can get today,” Stuart said. “I’m certain that she will get more scores in the 90s this year instead of scores like this. She’s not going to play like this again, she’s just got to turn the page and get ready for the next competition.”
Blake Trust shot a 114 for the Lady O, which was good for 14th place. Makenna Hutt rounded out the Beatrice scoring with a 19th place score of 120.
“Blake also had a big number that kind of hurt her score and she’s another one we have to work on inside of 100 yards,” Stuart said. “McKenna continues to gain experience. She continues to shoot scores that we know more experience will only make her better.”
Norris was led by Lauren Havlat’s eighth place score of 102 while Emma Severson finished 10th with a score of 106. Grace Gutzmer finished with a score of 125 while Faith Ebbers shot a 130 and Olivia Lentfer shot a 140.
Leading the way for Fairbury was Casey Nimmich, who had a score of 125. Lauren Patton finished with a 137, Addi Parack finished with a 141 and Brooklen Bear finished with a 163.
There was also a Class A tournament Tuesday at the Beatrice Country Club.
Lincoln Southwest came away with that team championship with a score of 340 while Millard North finished second at 354 and Papillion-LaVista finished third at 355.
Lincoln Southwest’s Kate Strickland won the individual championshiop with a score of 71 while Omaha Marian’s Jalea Culliver finished second with a 79 and Millard North’s Jazmine Taylor finished third -- also with a 79.
The Beatrice girls golf team will be in action again on Thursday when they host a dual with Fairbury. They travel to the Lincoln Pius X Invite next Tuesday.
